Pinyin can help you sound out unfamiliar characters, especially at the beginning. Try looking at the characters first, then use pinyin for the parts that stop you. Over time, this keeps pinyin as support instead of making it the only text you read.

Reread for a different purpose

On a second pass, read for the main idea. On a third pass, choose a few useful words or phrases to notice. Repetition is not wasted effort: the same story lets you pay attention to something new each time.

Keep vocabulary in the story

Write down a small number of words with the sentence or scene where you found them. A short note about who said it or what happened can be more useful than a long list without context.

Use audio when it is genuinely available

If a story has approved audio, listen after you have tried reading it. Follow along with the text, then read one or two lines aloud. When audio is not available, a quiet reread is still a useful practice session.

A simple weekly routine

Read one short story on the first day, revisit it the next day, and return once more later in the week. Keep the routine small enough that you can notice what has become easier without racing through unfamiliar material.
