How to Read Chinese Stories with Pinyin as a Beginner

Pinyin is a helpful bridge when you are starting to read Chinese stories. The aim is not to avoid it, but to use it at the moment it helps and then return your attention to the characters and meaning.
1. Read the title and context first
Before you begin, look at the title and any short introduction. Ask what people, places, or actions you might expect. This gives the first paragraph somewhere to land.
2. Try the Chinese before checking pinyin
Look at a sentence for a moment. Notice characters you recognize and any repeated words. Then use pinyin for the unfamiliar pieces that prevent you from continuing.
3. Use pinyin selectively
Cover it with a finger or read the characters first when you can. Pinyin is most useful when it helps you connect a character to a sound, not when it replaces the sentence.
