Chengyu (成语) are a well-known type of fixed Chinese expression, often introduced to learners as Chinese idioms. You may notice them in stories, conversations, news, dramas, and writing. For a beginner, they can look mysterious because a few characters can point to a much larger story or idea.
Chengyu are compact expressions with a larger context
Many chengyu are four characters long, but the useful thing to notice is not only their length. Chengyu often carry a familiar story, image, or cultural reference. Their everyday meaning may be clearer when you know the situation behind them.
